The most common greeting is Labas - hello.

Labas is informal and is mostly used among friends. In Lithuanian it is important to know polite and informal expressions. Formal or polite language would be used when addressing:

people you do not know / met for the first time
older people then you
people of a higher social status (teacher, lecturer...)

Formal/ polite greetings:
Good morning - Labas rytas
Good afternoon - Laba diena
Good evening - Labas vakaras
Good night - Labos nakties or labanakt (only before going to sleep)

There are many other greeting in colloquial language.

Words derived from labas:
labukas, laba, labutis

words derived from sveikas:
sveika, sveikute, sveiki

Slang:
privet (rus)

It is always important to know how to introduce yourself. So today you will learn how to do this.

The sentence consists only of 3 words (just like in English).
I am Kristina. - Aš esu Kristina.

Have a look at both sentences. Can you guess what each word means?

Aš is a subject of the sentence. Aš - I
Esu is the verb of the sentence. Esu - am
Kristina is the object.

To introduce other people you have to know how to conjugate the verb to be - būti. In English it is pretty easy. Only I and she/he/it differ from the rest. There is a certain pattern in Lithuanian as well:

I am - aš esu
you are - tu esi
he/she/it is- jis/ji yra

we are - mes esame
you are - jūs esate
they are - jie/jos yra

Listen:

Can you introduce her?
She is Virginija. - Ji yra Virginija.
We are John and Anne. Mes esame John ir Anne.

One more word you need to know is and - ir.

Congratulations!!! Now you can introduce yourself and other people.

There are three basic tenses in Lithuanian Past, Present and Future (Būtasis, Esamasis, Būsimasis).
The forth tense mentioned in the video is Būtasis dažninis, that is Past tense, equivalent of "used to" form in English. In this case the action took place in the past more then once. It represents a routine in the past, something that you used to do and do not do anymore.

When saying the phrase Zodiac sign in Lithuanian then the word "zodiac" is in genitive case. So the word "zodiakas" becomes " zodiako" and then add the word sign - Zodiako ženklas.
When pronouncing a word "zodiac" - "zodiakas" the soft sound is heard in between the letters i and a.
In Lithuanian it is "j" as in young.
When pronouncing the zodiac sign "Scorpio" - Skorpionas, you also hear the sound "j" in between the letters "i" and "o".

I am Aquarius, and you? - Aš esu vandenis, o Jūs? (polite form of you)

Note:
When talking about horoscopes in general Gemini is said as Dvyniai, that is plural form. However you can use it in singular form (Dvynys). So you would use singular form when you mean that some person (one person)is Gemini.
Aš esu dvynys.

Libra - Svarstyklės sign is always plural.
Pisces - Žuvys the same applies as to Gemini. When talking in general plural form is used. However when you talk about one person then singular is used - Žuvis.
Aš esu žuvis.

Kugelis - Potato pie

Kugelis - traditional dish made of potatos, potato pie
Kitchen - virtuvė
Pot - puodas
Bon appetit - Skanaus!

For the Kugelis you need: potatos, salt and pepper, milk, and some meat if you want.
Grate potatos add boiling milk and mix. Then add pepper and salt and some minced meat which was cooked in advance. Instead of pork you can use chicken or beef. If you are vegetarian you can skip the meat bit.
When everything is mixed together put it into an oven dish and leave it in the oven to cook for about one hour at 200 degrees C.

For sauce you can use only sour cream or youghurt or you can make your own white sause with some ham or mushrooms or both together.

Hi everyone, Sveiki!!!!

At last I have ordered a Macbook. It should be delivered in a week or so. So hopefully I will start updating this blog and post more videos on youtube very soon.
It seems it's been ages since i filmed something. If you have noticed the last 4 videos take place in London. So It was August when I had holiday in London and that was the last time when I had an opportunity to film and edit the vidoes.

What is the difference between laivas, keltas and valtis in Lithunian?

Laivas is quite a big ship. It could be fishing ship - žvejybinis laivas, or cargo ship - krovininis laivas, etc.
Keltas is used to transport people from one place to another. (E.g from one shore to another)
Valtis is a small boat. It could be a wooden with paddles or any similar type boat.

Upė feminine gender, but upelis masculine gender. Upelis is a small river, a stream.

Sorry and excuse me is the same word in Lithuanian - atsiprašau. However in different situations different intonation is used. When you ask for information and say excuse me then the intonation rises. The same happens in Lithuanian atsiprašau.
Other word for thank you is dėkui or dėkoju. Ačiū is more common in every day speech.

When you are asking for something and say please then in Lithuanian use prašau. When you are giving someone something and say Here you are, then in Lithuanian say "prašom".

bye, bye bye, cheerio - iki, viso, ate.

Iki and viso are very popular in every day speech. Viso has a certain degree of formality. You can say "viso" to your boss if you are on good terms and communicate like friends.
Iki is more used among friends.

See you later - iki pasimatymo. Just because people are becoming very lazy the shorter version of it is used more often, that is, "iki".

Ate is not formal and is more used by younger people in schools and colleges.

Good bye - viso gero. This is a very popular formal phrase.
All the best - viso geriausio. It is a way of saying good bye, however used in situations when someone is leaving for a longer time, e.g. to other country or other town, and you wont see that person very soon.

Less popular and a bit old-fashioned ways to say good bye:
Su Dievu or Sudiev - older generation would use it or a very religous person. This has a religious implication, word by word translation - With God. So this means be safe or have a safe trip home and so on. Sudiev is a shortened version of Su Dievu.

Paka, davai, nu davai- bye (from Russian)

There are few ways to ask a name of a person and the difference is a degree of formality.

Koks tavo vardas? - not formal, used among people of similar age or when asking a younger person.
Koks Jūsų vardas? - formal, used when asking a person of a higher social status or older then yourself.

Kuo tu vardu? - not formal and used less(in every day speech) then Koks tavo vardas? question.
Kuo Jūs vardu? - formal. the same applies as in Koks Jūsų vardas? question.

The difference between these two types of questions is that Koks tavo vardas? uses nominative case for the word "vardas" and Kuo tu vardu? uses instrumental case for the word "vardas". Because of this, question word and pronoun form differs.

There are two ways to greet a person: using nominative case or accusative case. The nominative case greetings are more common in everyday speech. Both laba diena and labą dieną are used, however the accusative form of good morning and good evening (labą rytą and labą vakarą) is used less often.

Common greetings for a guy in everyday speech:
